Farmers' market ready for season

The Oconee County Farmers' Market will open at 8 a.m. Saturday on the grounds of the Eagle Tavern Museum. The market features fresh vegetables, fruits, plants, baked items and other assorted goodies.

Market coordinator Karl Berg said it is difficult to predict how many vendors will show during at the startup of the market, but it usually "starts cranking in June and runs strong until September when it starts to fade out."

The market will run until the end of October each Saturday, weather permitting.

"This time of year, the produce typically are greens, root vegetables, lettuces. Most other fruits and vegetables are in the growing stages now and will be ready soon," Berg said. The market will have many assorted baked goods, such as poundcakes, pies, cookies, muffins, rolls, various homemade breads and pastries, as well as locally made soaps and lotions.

Berg said many familiar faces will return to the market this year.

Sammy Hansford will have his boiled and fried peanuts and fresh pork skins. Dory Franklin will have natural, farm-fresh lamb and homemade soaps made from sheep's milk. Maryanne Simmons will be at the market soon with her tomatoes grown from seeds in her "hothouse," and Russ
